Needed Steps for When Water Starts Flowing

The note above, we have all received. It is a list of steps one needs to take, not only to prevent health issues, but also, to prevent a house-wide system failure. 

Please see the notice received this morning from Asheville Water Department regarding steps to be taken before and when water service is returned. The steps of what to do when the water service is returned came the way seen below.

Mandatory System Wide City of Asheville Boil Water Notice 10-14-24

 If you are receiving this message, you are under a Boil Water Notice. 

The City of Asheville Water Resources Department has issued a Boil Water Notice to all customers due to loss of pressure in distribution system pipes and levels of turbidity (particles) in the water.

A Boil Water Notice means there is contamination due to impacts from Hurricane Helene including the potential for untreated water in the distribution system from pipe breaks and levels of turbidity that exceed Safe Drinking Water Act standards initially used to restore water pressure. Your water may look cloudy and/or have a chlorine odor. 

It is Required for customers to vigorously boil tap water for 1 minute before consuming it. Once laboratory testing of the system confirms the possibility of risk is not present, customers will receive notification that the boil water notice has been lifted via the same method you received this notice.

Water can be used for flushing toilets, washing hands, laundry and bathing. During bathing please monitor small children to ensure they do not accidentally drink the water.  Infants can be given sponge baths.  

What to do before water service returns:

  1.  
  2. Flip off the breaker to your water heater. 
  3.  
  4. Turn off water to your water heater. 
  5.  
  6. Turn off hot water under your sinks. 
  7.  
  8. Remove aerator (it typically unscrews) on faucets. 
  9.  
  10. Turn off the ice maker.
  11.  
  12. Turn off water to your whole house filter, if
  13.  you have one.

 

What to do when your water service returns

  1.  
  2. Flush your home plumbing by running the bathtub’s
  3.  cold water faucet.
  4.  
  5. Your water heater may be turned back on once your
  6.  home’s plumbing has been flushed.
  7.  
  8. It’s safe to flush your toilet after completing
  9.  steps 1 and 2.

It has been a little over 1 month ...

It has been a little over 1 month ... It's been a little over one month and water is still the main issue when it comes to utilities. Most places already have Power and Internet back, but the water that finally started flowing through our pipes is still highly questionable. The city makes it quite clear the fact that everyone is under a boil water advisory. We get phone calls everyday from the city reminding us of that fact. We have heard of some folks who are, besides flushing and doing laundry, are also bathing in this water without any consequences. Also have heard from some folks who have tried using it for bathing and developed some, always mild, some kind of reaction for a brief period of time. We are all different in the ways our body reacts to different organisms so people who are a bit more sensitive, are still using water delivered by FEMA and other organization who are still in town to help with our reconstruction effort. The Simplest of Acts can go a Long Way

    We had a full day yesterday, oh boy! I was exhausted by days end. For some of you who may not know us personally, Steve and I have been trying to sell our house for the better part of 2024. A task that has proven more challenging than we expected. So on top of everything, there is that and sometimes, we have to remember that there are things we still need to take care of in out own lives...     Yesterday we have showings here in our own house, our car has been in the shop for regular scheduled maintenance for the past month (don't ask) but they called us last minute to tell us they had a loaner vehicle.
